Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden
Designated “The Garden Capital of Texas,” Nacogdoches is home to the largest azalea garden in Texas. The Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden is situated in a 50-year old Loblolly Pine forest and boasts one of the most diverse azalea collections in the United States. Encompassing eight forested acres along the historic Lanana Creek on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, the impressionistic style garden features more than 7,000 evergreen and native azaleas accented with vibrant Japanese maples, camellias and other unique collections. The heart of the garden, also known as the Council Ring, is surrounded by deep watermelon pink blooms of the ‘Judge Solomon’ and white accents of ‘Mrs. G.G. Gerbing.’ One of a kind native varieties found in the garden include the yellow ‘Aromi Sunrise’, orange flowering ‘Tipsy Tangerine’, and yellow ‘Admiral Semmes’. During azalea season (late March to early April), beauty abounds in Nacogdoches. Enjoy more than 20 miles of azaleas, dogwoods and spring flowers during the annual Azalea Trails. Named after avid gardener and lover of nature's beauty, the Ruby M. Mize Garden was created thanks to an endowment established by Mize's daughter, Dottie Wisely. Previously an overgrown loblolly pine forest, the project brought together SFA students, community members and nursery professionals to bring this 11-acre garden to life. The garden is open from dawn to dusk.
